Why use a private college coach/consultant?
Doesn’t my school-based counselor already cover everything for my college process?
The honest answer is no. Although your school college counselor helps you to get ready for college, they don't help you to get into colleges, how to succeed on the SAT/ACT, and other crucial areas. A study of students that went on to higher education was underwritten by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
During the course of the study, they found the following to be true:
- Two-thirds of those surveyed rated their counselors as “poor or fair” at “helping you decide what school was right for you.”
- More than half gave similar ratings to their counselors for “explaining and helping you with the application process.”
- Nearly half said that their counselors made them feel “like I was just another face in the crowd.”
The American School Counselors Association responded to the “harsh” statements with
the following:
- School counselors are increasingly called on to do work outside of their mission, including: "discipline issues and sorting out scheduling and other administrative mix-ups with the high school."
- ASCA agrees with many of the conclusions from the public agenda study. More school counselors are required, and existing school counselors should not be overloaded with non-counseling duties which prevent them from spending time successfully guiding students to academic success and post-secondary education.
At YGO, we believe that schools in America are cutting back and failing to increase the counselor-to-student ratios, as well as the amount of time that counselors have in offering educational guidance.
With our services, this lack of guidance is made up for
- A 2009 study by the Lipman Hearne Organization was conducted on high-achieving seniors’ decision processes for what college they ultimately chose. One interesting fact revealed was that “a full 26 percent of students surveyed used a paid consultant or service in the college decision process.”
- Another important fact is that school based counselors are not allowed to assist in the financial preparation for college; They are not licensed to do so, and typically cannot offer any direction in obtaining help with this imperative part of the process. They are not available on evenings or weekends and do not provide many of the other services that YGO students are offered.
Although it may seem that we are not advocates of school counselors, we truthfully love school counselors and appreciate their hard work for students. We do not want to replace them; we simply strive to work with them, to fill in the "holes" of the help that they provide to you. Our priority is always and solely our students and their families.
